Thousand Oaks is a series that riffs off of the open letters Jack Kirby included in the fanmail pages of the early issues of four of his short-lived series from his late career return to Marvel Comics. These letters functioned as both sales pitches and personal essays on the themes Kirby aspired to explore. Book Three: Monolith Mail considers his adaptations of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It includes a poetic adaptation of the movie, a comic book treatment of Sun Ra's Space Is The Place, and pictorial and essay presentations of research into the film and novel versions of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
